Lepenski vir

Distance from the hotel: 17km

The prehistoric Lepenski Vir site is one of the most significant and oldest Neolithic discoveries in this part of Europe. Located on the right bank of the Danube river within the Djerdap gorge, near the Silver Lake, it was named after the Danube whirlpool itself. The site itself is the center of one of the most complex prehistoric cultures, and provides a unique look at the first urban prehistoric man in this part of the planet.

Archaeological excavations, which took place in the area of the Đerdap gorge in the period between 1965 and 1967, provided us with great knowledge regarding prehistoric civilizations and helped us get acquainted with the culture that originated and developed in this locality. The discovery was made during detailed research in Djerdap, and after the excavation was completed, the site was moved to its current location for additional protection. In 2011, a new visitor center was opened, which preserves the sights and remnants of a culture that astonished the world with its discovery.

Today, one of the synonyms for this cultural treasure are fishing stone statues, which were found in almost every fortification in prehistoric times, giving scientists a unique conclusion that these monumental sculptures were used as a kind of religious protector of houses and families who worshiped them. Discovered by Professor Dragoslav Srejović, who led a team of archaeologists, and whose sensational discovery and excavation process can be seen as part of a film project at the Lepenski Vir Visitor Center.
